How the Interaction of Heatwaves and Urban Heat Islands Amplify Urban Warming

چکیده
An increase in global temperature will likely result more intense and frequent heatwaves that would last longer. Simultaneously, the growth of urban population requires areas land incorporated into urbanization, because most people are expected to live cities, which intensity duration heat islands. However, extent link between warming induced urbanization caused islands is barely understood. Understanding give a new information about catastrophic mitigation strategies. This paper, therefore, quantifies, at sub-continental scale Eastern North America, effects background perturbations by synergies using simulations from Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model, focusing on responses energy balances, boundary layer height vertical profiles heat, momentum moisture. Urban climates and heat islands: albedo, evapotranspiration, and anthropogenic heat
As an introduction to this special issue on urban heat islands and cool communities, this paper reviews some of the characteristics of urban climates and the causes and effects of urban heat islands. In particular, the impacts of surface albedo, evapotranspiration, and anthropogenic heating on the near-surface climate are discussed. Numerical simulations and field measurements indicate that inc...
متن کاملResponses of arthropod populations to warming depend on latitude: evidence from urban heat islands.
Biological effects of climate change are expected to vary geographically, with a strong signature of latitude. For ectothermic animals, there is systematic latitudinal variation in the relationship between climate and thermal performance curves, which describe the relationship between temperature and an organism's fitness. Here, we ask whether these documented latitudinal patterns can be genera...
متن کاملAttribution of mortality to the urban heat island during heatwaves in the West Midlands, UK
BACKGROUND The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect describes the phenomenon whereby cities are generally warmer than surrounding rural areas. Traditionally, temperature monitoring sites are placed outside of city centres, which means that point measurements do not always reflect the true air temperature of urban centres, and estimates of health impacts based on such data may under-estimate the impac...

متن کاملRole of City Texture in Urban Heat Islands at Nighttime.
An urban heat island (UHI) is a climate phenomenon that results in an increased air temperature in cities when compared to their rural surroundings. In this Letter, the dependence of an UHI on urban geometry is studied. Multiyear urban-rural temperature differences and building footprints data combined with a heat radiation scaling model are used to demonstrate for more than 50 cities worldwide...
